Background of the Study
Processed foods, which contain artificial additives, preservatives, and high sugar content, have been linked to neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders. Studies indicate that excessive consumption of processed foods may contribute to attention deficit disorders by affecting neurotransmitter activity and increasing inflammation in the brain (Adebayo et al., 2024). High sugar and artificial additives can lead to impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulty in maintaining focus (Muhammad & Usman, 2023).
In Adamawa State, dietary shifts toward processed and convenience foods raise concerns about their potential effects on attention and cognitive function. This study examines the impact of processed food consumption on attention disorders, highlighting the importance of diet in cognitive health.
Statement of the Problem
Attention disorders, particularly among children and adolescents, are becoming increasingly prevalent in Adamawa State. While genetic and environmental factors contribute to attention disorders, dietary influences remain underexplored. This study seeks to investigate the association between processed food intake and attention disorders, providing evidence for dietary modifications to support cognitive health.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of processed food consumption among individuals in Adamawa State.
To examine the relationship between processed food intake and attention disorders.
To evaluate dietary interventions for managing attention-related issues.
Research Questions
How prevalent is processed food consumption in Adamawa State?
What is the relationship between processed food intake and attention disorders?
Can dietary modifications reduce attention disorder symptoms?
Research Hypotheses
High processed food consumption is significantly associated with attention deficits.
Individuals who consume fewer processed foods exhibit better attention and focus.
Dietary interventions that reduce processed food intake improve cognitive performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on individuals in Adamawa State, particularly children and adolescents, assessing their dietary habits and attention-related behaviors. Limitations include potential confounding factors such as genetic predisposition and environmental influences.
